But that's just it, Mama; I don't know that I have time. Most women my age are already married..., or at least engaged. I don't want to become an old maid.

GRETCHEN
You, an old maid? I think not. Everyone goes through life at their own pace. Don't feel you need to marry just to marry. But you are a beautiful young woman, and any man would consider himself lucky to have you.

KATRINA
IT'S TRUE; HE'S HANDSOME AND CHARMING!
AND HIS SMILE, DISARMING,
BUT IS HE REALLY RIGHT FOR ME?

I know society tells us that we need to marry to be safe and secure; so we'll have money and someone to care for us. But if you are lucky enough to find someone who will make you happy as well... that's rare, Katrina. So many married people don't have that. It makes falling in love much easier.

KATRINA
But what if I don't know love when I see it? What if I'm wrong?

GRETCHEN
I remember one time, many years ago, when your Papa and I were young, I wanted this beautiful hat I had seen at the milliner's; but it was so expensive and we had no money for such things. Well, a few weeks later, I woke up one morning to find that very hat sitting on the table, wrapped with beautiful silk ribbon. I had never said a single word to your Papa about that hat. That's love. Why don't you invite Ichabod to the harvest ball?

KATRINA
I already have.

GRETCHEN
Perhaps you're not so confused after all.
